Shoko Shuseikan

Located on the site of Shuseikan, a group of factories built by Nariakira Shimazu, the 28th lord of the Shimazu domain, at the end of the Edo period, the Shoko Shuseikan is a historical museum that exhibits items related to the Shimazu domain. The building was destroyed by fire during the Satsuma-British War, but was rebuilt in 1865 by Tadayoshi, the 29th lord, as a steam ironworks and machinery factory. The adjacent Iso Garden can also be enjoyed.

Materials related to the Shimazu family, Satsuma faceted glass, Satsuma pottery, and other items are on display. The main building was built in 1865 and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. It is also located adjacent to Senganen Garden, the first Western-style stone building in Japan to incorporate arches.

In 2015, part of this facility, the machine shop of the former Shuseikan, was registered as a World Heritage Site as part of the “Industrial Revolutionary Heritage of Meiji Japan: Iron and Steel Making, Shipbuilding, and Coal Industry.
