Tanegashima is also known as "the most beautiful rocket launch site in the world. Even when there are no launches, visitors to the Tanegashima Space Center can see models of rockets and spacecraft and watch videos of H-2A rocket launches. Once a year, the Tanegashima Space Center holds an open-house event where visitors can see the inside of the facility, which is usually closed to the public, and listen to lectures by researchers.
Takezaki Beach, located inside the space center, is a beautiful beach and one of the eight scenic spots in Minami-Tane. The contrast between the futuristic facilities and the pristine landscape is a scenery unique to Tanegashima.
The first seafood of Tanegashima is lobsters. Locals call it "egane," and it is a luxury to have egane soup served in miso soup with a big bowl of rice, which is included in regular meals. Other freshly caught seafood such as mizu-ika (Japanese common squid), kibinago (dried yellowtail), and tobiko (flying fish) are also delicious. Sweet potatoes made from Anno sweet potatoes, Japanese sweets, and sweet potato shochu are popular as souvenirs.
